Nantong University , referred to as Tongda , is a public university located in Nantong City , Jiangsu Province , the People's Republic of China . Founded in 1912, the famous modern industrialist and educator Mr. Zhang Jian established a private Nantong Medical College and Nantong Textile College. Nantong University is a key university jointly established by the Ministry of Transport of the People's Republic of China and the People's Government of Jiangsu Province. The 15 universities in Jiangsu Province are focusing on the construction of comprehensive universities. The Ministry of Education's "Outstanding Doctor Education Program" and "Outstanding Teacher Training Program" pilot universities. . Nantong University has the earliest independent medical school and textile college in China. It is known as the "cradle of Chinese textile engineers" and "China Textile Huangpu Military Academy." The famous historian, sinologist, and Professor Fei Zhengqing of Harvard University think: "Nantong University is a representative of the modern Chinese private technology university."
The private Nantong Medical College is one of the earliest high medical colleges established in China. In 1927, the Nantong Medical Specialized School was changed to private Nantong Medical University. In 1928, the three universities of agriculture, spinning, and medicine in Nantong merged into private Nantong University and later became Nantong University. In November 1930, the private Nantong University was renamed Nantong College . In the second half of 1937, when the War of Resistance Against Japan broke out , Nantong College was forced to suspend classes. In August 1938, Nantong College was relocated to Shanghai, and the agricultural and textile subjects were resumed. The medical school merged with the Jiangsu Provincial Institute of Medical Sciences to become the National Jiangsu Medical College. In 1957, Jiangsu Medical College moved from Zhenjiang to Nanjing and changed its name to Nanjing Medical College . Nanjing Medical College developed Nanjing Medical University , Nanjing University of Chinese Medicine , Yangzhou University Medical College, and Jiangsu University School of Medicine. In July of the same year, the medical school moved to Suzhou and was renamed Suzhou Medical College (now Suzhou Medical College). Since February 2000, Nantong Medical College has been transferred from the Ministry of Communications under the jurisdiction of the Jiangsu Provincial People's Government. It has implemented a central-local co-construction and local-oriented management system.
Nantong Private Textile College is China's first textile college. In 1927 it was changed to Nantong Textile University. In 1928, he merged with the medical and agricultural sciences to become a private Nantong University. In 1930, it was renamed Nantong College Textile Division. In 1952, when the colleges and universities of the country were adjusted, the Textile Section of Nantong University was relocated to Shanghai and merged into Donghua University of East China Textile Institute . In December 1977, with the consent of the Provincial People's Government, the Nantong Branch of Nanjing Institute of Technology (now Southeast University ) was established . In September 1995, approved by the State Education Commission, it was renamed Nantong Institute of Technology. Nantong Teacher’s College was established in 1958. Nantong Normal University is an undergraduate institution of higher learning approved by the Ministry of Education in the original Nantong Teachers College and Nantong College of Education in March 1999.
In May 2004, approved by the Ministry of Education of China , the original Nantong Medical College , Nantong Institute of Technology , and Nantong Normal University were merged and formed.

There are 23 secondary colleges, 1 independent college, and 1 large-scale integrated tertiary Affiliated Hospital. There are full-time schools. There are more than 36,000 students in the school. In 2017, according to the “China's Best Academic Ranking” released by Shanghai Soft Education Information Consulting Co. , 2017, the ranking list included 91 first-level disciplines, and a total of 4,576 university disciplines from 453 universities and colleges were on the list. - 梅自強，中國工程院院士，著名紡織工程專家。1951年畢業於南通學院，1995年當選為中國工程院院士。我國高產梳棉理論和實踐的創始人和學科帶頭人。80年代牽頭組織研製成功「條干均勻度儀」，達到國際先進水平。
- 姚穆，中國工程院院士，紡織材料專家。1948年考取私立南通學院紡織科紡織工程系，獲國家科技進步一等獎、三等獎各一項，省部級獎多項。2001年當選為中國工程院院士。
- 保錚，中國科學院院士，著名電子學家。1948年考入南通學院紡科，長期從事雷達系統和信號處理的教學和研究工作，1984年獲「國家級有突出貢獻的中青年專家」稱號。1991年當選為中國科學院學部委員（院士）。
- 顧曉松，中國工程院院士，神經生物學家。1977-1980年，本科就讀於南通醫學院（今南通大學醫學院）臨床醫學系臨床醫學專業。2014年，榮獲何梁何利科學與技術進步獎。2015年，當選為中國工程院醫藥學部院士。
